The concept of friendship is emphasized in Proverbs, where it is described as a “a friend loves at all times” (Proverbs 17:17) and “one who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother” (Proverbs 18:24). Jesus also spoke about friendship and its importance. In John 15:13, he said “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

In biblical context the term is also refer to a kind of non-romantic close relationship, in the sense of companionship and mutual trust. The Bible also speaks of friends as being people who share a common belief or mission, such as in the case of David and Jonathan in the book of 1 Samuel where it says “the soul of Jonathan was bound to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.”
